Pokemon Trading Card Game booster packs were stolen from a Walmart in Florida by a 23-year-old man, according to WLFA News. For the past two decades, the popularity and value of the Pokemon TCG have skyrocket. Empty shelves litter retail establishments across the world as collectors rush to buy Nintendo memorabilia as soon as it goes on sale.

According to WLFA News, a collector’s quest for Pokemon cards went too far when they stole dozens of packs from a Florida Walmart. After attempting to steal the Nintendo treasures a number of times, detectives finally caught the man.

Over $600 in Pokemon cards had been stolen from a local Pinellas County Walmart when Eric Jermone Drake was arrested on December 29th, 2021. In an affidavit from the Largo Police Department, the department stated that they had taken more than $354 worth of TCG booster packs off the store shelf.

Drake opened them before he left and walked out with the merchandise in his pocket. After stealing $292 worth of Pokemon cards from the same retailer a second time, Drake was arrested. This time though, a Walmart employee approached the Florida resident and then turned him over to the authorities.

Because of their rising popularity, this isn’t the first time that thieves have gone to great lengths to get Pokemon cards. The US government accused a Georgia man in October 2021 of stealing $57,000 in economic disaster relief funding in order to pay for the Nintendo merchandise. He was arrested and charged.

Rare cards may sell for hundreds of dollars in internet auctions while TCG packs cost pennies on the dollar. The status of Drake’s punishment has not been updated by the Largo Police Department as of this writing.
