‘You’re on your own’ Apple CEO Tim Cook shocks Mark Zuckerberg, casts Metaverse aside. Over the next five years, Mark Zuckerberg’s virtual reality playground, the metaverse, could engulf us all.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Tim Cook appears to be unconvinced and not interested on what Zuckerberg is selling. Assuming Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is correct.
He said in his Power On email that Apple will not engage in the metaverse zeitgeist, which has been spurred on the most lately by Meta, even though the company is expected to unveil a mixed reality headset this year.
Gurman released an excerpt from the newsletter that was exclusively available to subscribers on Twitter. “I’ve been told unequivocally that the idea of a completely virtual world where users can escape — as they can in Meta Platforms/vision Facebook’s for the future — is off-limits to Apple,” Gurman wrote.
While Meta’s virtual reality experiences may be more immersive, Apple intends the headgear to be used for “bursts of gaming, communication and content consumption,” he said.
Apple’s yet-to-be-announced headset is expected to include dual 8K displays and a heavy emphasis on augmented reality, according to reports. According to Gurman’s estimate, Apple plans to allow users to spend more time staring at the real world around them than the Oculus Quest permits.
Apple’s stance, as stated by Gurman, would be heartening to anyone who is skeptical of big tech’s metaverse push, despite the lack of a strong “no” from the company itself.
At this point, you’ve gained the support of at least one major tech company. Cyber-helmet sales will continue, but at least you won’t be wearing it to all of your work meetings.
